We are located in Park Gate, just off Junction 9 of the M27
Initially you will be invited for a consultation visit. This is a chance for us and your dog(s) to meet and to confirm the booking if we are all happy. We can also discuss any issues you may like us to work on. A deposit will be payable if a reservation is agreed. The Mutt House is licensed as a boarding establishment by Fareham Borough Council and we receive regular inspections from them. Colin and Nickys' experience prior to 2010 was mainly with larger breeds (Rottweilers and Dobermanns) and we are delighted with our success in improving behaviours and problem areas with stronger type breeds. However since March 2010 when we began this business, we have had most breeds and sizes of dog here on holiday and numerous owners have commented on better behaviour, improved heel-walking, more confidence (or more respect) when with other dogs. The most common observation is how much calmer their pets are after a stay with us. Sadly many dogs do not benefit from early socialisation and interaction with others. This may lead to an anxious owner who then fears meeting other dogs when out on walks and this feeds back to their dog thus increasing the anxiety levels of all concerned. By sharing our home with differing breeds often from two or three households, such issues can be overcome within a matter of hours. We do however insist that any dogs booked to be here at the same time meet in advance so we can assess their suitability together. Where issues are deemed possible we have our own sitters plus a small network of local companies operating similarly to us where we can hopefully find you a space and put you in direct contact with them. We strive to never turn a customer away without trying to help, in the hope that they will try us first in future.
If you require more serious training or behaviour work, we are pleased to offer this service, but at an additional cost which would be agreed at the consultation. Colin is currently undertaking a dog behaviour course with COAPE (www.COAPE.org) and will be continuing this to diploma level. We also have access to Kevin Wrigley (www.armchairdogs.co.uk), a Southampton based qualified behavioural trainer (Post-graduate diploma in Companion Animal Behaviour Counselling from Southampton University). He runs dog training classes locally and uses force-free methods which we have found amazingly simple and extremely effective. Kevin trained our own Rotti, Zulu, and he acheived "Top Dog" status by the age of 10 months and anyone who knew Zulu would endorse his immaculate behaviour, attitude and temperament with people and other dogs. We also work with Cesar Millan's (The Dog Whisperer) principles in ensuring that the owner/trainer is calm and assertive, which gives the dog the benefit of learning in a calm environment. Fun and enjoyment is a must when getting your dog to learn and retain new commands or behaviours. We use titbits, favourite toys and praise as motivation and reward for desired behaviour. Dogs of all ages and sizes respond well if it is a fun session.
